Mmmmm – the GREAT LEMON SAGA!
Those of you who came to Dressage in the Sandhills know all about our last minute “extra” job of handling concessions. A story better left untold…EXCEPT for the lemonade. We have always had fresh squeezed lemonade at that show – since the very beginning – so I was determined to keep upthe tradition. Borrowed an old timey juicer and called a friend to help me out as far as how many lemons I needed to order. “6 cases should do it” she said. So I called the packing company and duly ordered 6 cases of lemons. They arrived. HUGE CASES – must have been 150+ lemons per case. 6 times 150 ….hmmmm. Guess there are different size cases. Anyway, we squeezed and mixed and squeezed etc etc – was great lemonade and everybody enjoyed it. Sunday everybody pulled out and I walked into the kitchen to find FOUR UNOPENED CASES OF LEMONS!!! YIKES!!! So, loaded into truck and brought home. Had to get them out of cases or they would rot. First picture is of my kitchen filled with lemons.
Then came the GREAT IDEA. We would have a neighborhood pot luck and everything had to be made with lemons from the show! Second picture is a counter filled with lemony things. Plus, we had, of course, a signature drink that was FABULOUS – made with lemons, raspberries and vodka! Found that on the Grey Goose website. We had lemon caper chicken, lemon risoto, salad w/lemon dressing, lemon pasta, lemon merangue, lemon sorbet, lemon bars. And more I cannot even remember! Then for the rest of the week we squeezed lemons and froze the juice for later! I only have about 50 more lemons to squeeze!
Oh yes, for next year I have found a new concessionaire….and they will make the lemonade!

Spring Fling (360) prize list – rev 3/1/2010
Take a few minutes to make sure your paperwork is in order.
PLEASE go to http://www.eqverification.org and print out the one page document that lists all your “useless” numbers.
If you want to ride qualifying for the Regional Championships the rider and owner must have full memberships with the USEF and USDF (participating) and the horse must be registered/recorded with USEF (annual or life) and USDF (life).
If you see HID anywhere under your horses’ name or USDF non-member ID under rider or owner – that’s not enough to ride qualifying.
If you are not interested in qualifying for Regionals but are interested in USDF year-end awards the horse must be life registered with the USDF and owner & rider must have memberships – participating or GMO (membership through your local dressage/combined training association). The horse does NOT have to have a USEF registration.
The very least you need to ride in a recognized dressage show is a USDF HID# for your horse (one time $20 fee) and membership in USEF and USDF (participating or GMO) for rider and owner (otherwise a non-member fee is required $30 for USEF and $20 for USDF). If you have a USDF non-member ID – we have yet to figure out what it is good for since you still must pay a $20 USDF non-member fee every time you show.
Got it? Good luck. The USDF is now starting to impose a fine on show secretaries if entries are reported incorrectly – ie. scores are reported as qualifying but horse registrations & rider memberships are incorrect. There is even talk of imposing heavy fines on the show’s technical delegate if horse registrations and rider/owner memberships are incorrect. The “sport” of dressage has become the “business” of dressage.
Bottom line, please don’t get angry with show management when we hold your entry aside. Please take the time and assume responsibility for having the correct registrations/memberships. If you are confused - contact the show secretary or the USDF office.
If the above is still confusing, I have copied the latest from the USEF/USDF on “stuff”.
No More USEF Affidavits at Dressage Competitions
Effective 12/1/2008, if an exhibitor does not submit the proper USEF membership documentation to the competition and the competition cannot verify such information (with the exception of USEF Federation measurement cards) the exhibitor will be responsible to pay the $30 USEF non-member fee. USEF has discontinued the use of USEF affidavits for Dressage Competitions.
Attention Regional Championship Qualifying Classes:
The 2009 FEI YR Individual test MAY NOT be used as a qualifying test for the 2009 Great American/USDF Regional Championships. Since this test was changed (January 1, 2009), it is no longer equivalent to Prix St. Georges and therefore it does NOT qualify for the regional championships.
Required Membership Documentation for Qualifying Classes:
All members who compete in qualifying classes for Great American/USDF Regional Championships MUST show proof of both USEF and USDF memberships for the rider, the owner and the horse. USDF requires the horse to have a USDF Lifetime Horse Registration, for the rider to have a USDF Particpating Membership and for the owner to have a USDF Participating or Business Membership. Competitors may file a USDF affidavit to prove USDF memberships, however, USEF no longer provides affidavits, therefore, competitors MUST have proof of USEF senior, junior or life memberships for the rider and owner, and proof of an annual or life recording for the horse. Since a USEF affidavit is not an option, failure to have proof of appropriate USEF memberships would prohibit entry into a qualifying class, UNLESS the member chooses to apply or re-apply for USEF membership prior to riding their test.
Online Membership/Horse Registration Transactions
Please ensure that when exhibitors provide proof of online membership payment, that they provide the page which indicates completion of Step Three. This page includes a transaction code. This is the only page of their transaction that indicates that they successfully completed their transaction.
Incomplete Membership and Horse Registration Applications
Please be advised that membership and horse applications submitted at shows with incomplete information will not be effective as of the date of the show. Please encourage individuals submitting applications to double check their forms, making sure all of the member and horse information as well as payment information is complete. Membership or horse registration will not take effect until all correct paperwork and/or fees are submitted by the member and received in the USDF office.

It was certainly a beautiful weekend and we thank you all for joining us. Unfortunately this was the last recognized dressage show that we will be running at Latta Plantation. The facility is lovely and we couldn’t ask for a better crew than Valerie and the Latta Plantation staff but the show simply has not been supported enough in the past few years to cover expenses. Leslie Lytton’s Lighten Up Dressage schooling show series is perfect for this venue and we urge you all to support her.
